The piPATCH-S-DL is a World's First Space-Friendly Highly Radiation Efficient ZeroCore CubeSat Patch Antenna working in the whole S-Downlink Band (2200-2290 MHz) intended for High Data Rate satellite communication systems. S11 parameter is set to -10dB at least over the whole range, with peak of -20dB response. The RHCP (Right Hand Circular Polarization) is achieved using hybrid 0/90° phasing module implemented on the module level.

What is different? Unlike traditional laminated Rogers PCB-based antennas, the piPATCH-S-DL contains the ZeroCore permitivity layer improving efficiency and EMI shielding from the back side preventing the near-field loss effects.

Microstrip matching and phasing networks on the third party antennas radiates your gold-producing RF signal power into the satellite body, whilst you need it to be radiated towards the groundstation instead.

Permittivity is the game changer. Antenna radiation efficiency is strongly dependent on its ability to couple the input RF power into the open space. Each antenna resonant frequency corresponds to a physical dimension of the radiator.

Yes, antennas can be built electrically shorter. But the penalty is the efficiency compromise. Active radiator and its counterpart groundplane can be understood as capacitor plates which are charged by the applied electrical field. To increase the capacity, you can either increase the size of the plates or insert a dielectric material. On the input side of the antenna port, the impedance is effectively the same. However, energizing particles inside of the dielectric material costs you extra energy. And that makes losses.

Third party antennas typically use dielectric materials with permittivity greater than 3.5 to shrink the size and tweak the radiation pattern. The piPATCH-S-DL antenna is working with permittivity very close to 1, which is almost an ideal case for a vacuum-based capacitor. Centered on the groundplane also makes it ideal with radiation pattern and polarization. The excellent axial ratio makes it a Number One on the Market.
