As the Space-based long distance (free space loss -148dB @ 1090MHz, 550 km range) ADS-B link budget is set to be extremely tight (~ -90 to -100dBm level only! at the 550 km slant range signal level with 750W transponder), a special care have to be taken to the EMC/EMI environment in order to maximize the receiver sensitivity yield.
To test whether the satellite bus subsystems, flatsat or satellite qualification model (magnetorquers, MPPT solar controllers, DC/DC converters, transmitters, mixers, local oscillators, etc.) are not affecting the piADSB-NG system noisefloor, the Engineering Model grade with identical electrical and RF properties is available. It is highly recommended to run the test before the flight and observe whether the fully operational satellite is not limiting the maximum available range/frame rate in open space or using ADS-B 1090 MHz squitter test signal generator.
